The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Homer C. Darling, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 132d Infantry Regiment, 33d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Bois-du-Fays, France, October 10 – 12, 1918. Exposed to heavy machine-gun fire from the front and right flank, Second Lieutenant Darling led his platoon forward through heavy brush, although suffering heavy casualties. During the advance he and one other member of his platoon attacked a machine-gun nest and captured three machine guns and five prisoners. In hand-to-hand fighting he personally killed five Germans and wounded others.
