The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private First Class Raymond Danley (ASN: 553753), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company B, 8th Machine-Gun Battalion, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, at Courboin, France, on the night of July 14 – 15, 1918. When other means of liaison were impossible Private Danley volunteered to act as a runner. He repeatedly carried messages through intense artillery fire from the company P.C. to a front-line platoon.
