The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Corporal Francis L. Daniels (ASN: 2176745), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company H, 353d Infantry Regiment, 89th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Tailly, France, 2 November 1918. When his company had been held up by a machine-gun, and a comrade killed at his side, Corporal Daniels voluntarily advanced alone over an open space for 200 yards in the face of the machine-gun fire into a clump of bushes, from which he succeeded in killing the enemy gunner and capturing the gun.
