No. 43, W.D., 1918), Private Henry Daniel (ASN: 1038067), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Battery A, 10th Field Artillery Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, on the morning of 16 July 1918, near St. Eugene, France, Private Daniel courageously carried important messages through four kilometers of heavy shell fire near enemy lines. Finding a wounded soldier he picked him up and carried him through a German barrage safely back to a dressing station. [A Distinguished Service Cross was awarded for this action.]

    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private Henry Daniel (ASN: 1038067), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Battery A, 10th Field Artillery, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near St. Eugene, France, 9 July 1918. Private Daniel repeatedly volunteered and carried important messages four kilometers through heavy shell fire near the enemy’s lines. On one trip he found a wounded soldier and carried him through an enemy barrage to the dressing station.
