The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private First Class Charles E. Daniel (ASN: 1287351), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company B, 116th Infantry Regiment, 29th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in the Bois-d’Etrayes, France, 27 October 1918. Private Daniels crawled from his own trenches to within range of an enemy machine-gun nest which had been harassing his company all day, and bombed out the gunners with hand grenades, thereby enabling his company to occupy more advantageous position.
