The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private Earl W. Curtis (ASN: 2101765), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company B, 59th Infantry Regiment, 4th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Brieulles-sur-Meuse, France, 29 September 1918. Advancing alone across open territory and exposed to extremely heavy machine-gun fire, Private Curtis rescued a fellow soldier who was lying wounded beyond the front line. He accomplished his mission, even after being painfully wounded in the head during his return.
