War Department, General Orders 98 (1919)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private Walter Currie (ASN: 567917), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company A, 59th Infantry Regiment, 4th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Ville-Savoye, France, 7 August 1918. On the Vesle River, when his company was in need of ammunition and after several men had been killed in the attempt to secure it, Private Currie volunteered and went for ammunition across an open field, swept by machine-gun fire. He successfully returned with the ammunition, thereby greatly assisting his company to hold its position. He was severely wounded near Brieulles while making a gallant stand against the enemy with twelve other men, the only survivors of his platoon.
