    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private Fred Cummins (ASN: 1975075), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company F, 132d Infantry Regiment, 33d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Consenvoye, France, 9 October 1918. Private Cummins, single-handed, captured a German machine-gun, killing one of the crew and routing the others. He then turned the gun on the enemy with great effectiveness, protecting the right flank of his battalion. Later in the day he volunteered and rescued an outpost of three men, which was surrounded by the enemy. He performed these missions with great courage, bravery, and initiative, subjected to severe enemy fire throughout the entire exploit.
