The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Corporal Fred Ervin Cullen (ASN: 567377), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company D, 12th Machine-Gun Battalion, 4th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Bazoches, France, 7 August 1918. When two American soldiers attempted to cross an open space and were fired upon by enemy machine gun, one of the soldiers fell wounded, and the enemy concentrated their fire upon the fallen man. Under enemy machine-gun fire Corporal Cullen rushed forward 75 yards and in spite of the heavy fire carried his wounded comrade to a place of safety.
