The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Claude H. Craig, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 132d Infantry Regiment, 33d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, at Bois-des-Forges, France, 26 September 1918. When the advance of his platoon was held up by enemy machine-gun fire, Lieutenant Craig, with utter disregard for his own safety and in front of his platoon, personally led it in the attack on the machine-gun nests, and assisted in destroying the hostile nests, killing 2 officers and 6 men. His courageous action was an inspiration to his men and made possible the advance of the attacking wave.
