    By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), First Sergeant Edward J. Cox (ASN: 5480206), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Company L, 30th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, under the heaviest of shell fire on 15 July 1918, First Sergeant Cox performed without regard for his personal safety. On 23 July near Jaulgonne, Sergeant Cox led a platoon and conducted it all through the attack, displaying initiative, ability to handle and control men, coolness and unquestionable courage.     The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to First Sergeant Edward J. Cox (ASN: 5480206), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company L, 30th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Jaulgonne, France, 23 July 1918. Although suffering from severe mustard-gas burns, Sergeant Cox led a platoon through the attack of July 23 with unquestionable initiative, coolness, and courage.
