By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), First Lieutenant (Infantry) Phillip H. Condit, United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with the 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, on the night of 11 October 1918, near Cunel, France, Lieutenant Condit led two platoons of his company in an attack against a nest of machine guns, with great bravery and disregard for his own safety. Although met with a withering machinegun fire, he succeeded in killing the entire enemy group, including an officer. His company commander having been wounded, he organized an entire company sector in the shallow enemy trench which had been occupied. Throughout the night and for two days following he held the positions against repeated counter attacks by the enemy. His splendid courage and confident and cheerful bearing was an inspiration to his men during great hardships and dangers. [A Distinguished Service Cross was awarded for this action.]
