By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Captain (Infantry) Hanon Fields Combs, United States Army, is cited (Posthumously) by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Company C, 38th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, during the barrage at the Marne, Captain Combs held complete control of his men. He showed coolness and excellent judgment in the handling of his men. This was true of him throughout the fighting during July and August 1918. His bravery, coolness and soldierly qualities gave his men complete confidence in him and gave him excellent control of them in the thickest of the Marne and Vesle fighting.
