By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Luther W. Cobbey, United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Company B, 7th Machine Gun Battalion, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, Lieutenant Cobbey refused to be evacuated even though seriously wounded until the wounded men had been tended to and evacuated.

    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Luther Webb Cobbey, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company B, 7th Machine-Gun Battalion, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, at Chateau-Thierry, France, May 31 – 4 June 1918. Responding to a call for help Lieutenant Cobbey crossed the bridge over the Marne alone under heavy machine-gun fire of our own and enemy troops and assisted an officer and several wounded soldiers who had been trapped on the north bank of the river to cross the bridge and reach our lines in safety.
