Cobbey, United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Company B, 7th Machine Gun Battalion, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, although heavily shelled in his position and knowing that other guns had retired, Lieutenant Cobbey kept his guns in action and held the upper bridge across the Marne.

    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Luther Webb Cobbey, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company B, 7th Machine-Gun Battalion, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, at Chateau-Thierry, France, May 31 – 4 June 1918. Responding to a call for help Lieutenant Cobbey crossed the bridge over the Marne alone under heavy machine-gun fire of our own and enemy troops and assisted an officer and several wounded soldiers who had been trapped on the north bank of the river to cross the bridge and reach our lines in safety.
