The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Corporal Fred Clay (ASN: 263425), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company K, 125th Infantry Regiment, 32d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Sergy, France, 31 July 1918. After all runners had become casualties in attempting to carry out their missions, Corporal Clay voluntarily assumed the duties of company runner. His efforts were materially responsible for success gained during the day, during the course of which he repeatedly exposed himself to direct enemy artillery and machine-gun fire.
