The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private John F. Clark (ASN: 550617), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company E, 38th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Moulins, France, 15 July 1918. Private Clark carried numerous messages from company headquarters to the front-line platoons, when it was almost impossible to maintain liaison, particularly exposing himself to intense enemy fire. Through his efforts communication was maintained at a critical time in the defensive operations against the last enemy offensive.

Clark (ASN: 550617), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Company E, 38th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, Private Clark displayed exceptional heroism in carrying messages from his Company Post of Command to platoons in the front line. Under heavy enemy artillery fire, with utter disregard for his own personal safety he performed his duty. [A Distinguished Service Cross was awarded for this action.]
