The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private First Class David O. Clapp (ASN: 56810), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company B, 28th Infantry Regiment, 1st Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in the defense of Cantigny, France, 28 May 1918. Although wounded several times, Private First Class Clapp stayed with his automatic rifle and assisted in the reconsolidation of his platoon. He was ordered to the aid station, but after receiving first aid insisted on returning to his post, where he remained working until forced to be evacuated.
