The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Captain (Infantry) Charles Everett Chenoweth, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 363d Infantry Regiment, 91st Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in the Forest of Argonne, France, September 29 – 30, 1918. At the time when troops on the left had retired, Captain Chenoweth, with his company, covered the left flank of his division and thus prevented an attack by the enemy upon its flank. After being severely wounded, he remained at his post until he had issued the necessary orders for holding the position he had seized.
