No. 43, W.D., 1918), Corporal Marile Chafin (ASN: 542435), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Company I, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, on 15 July 1918, near Fossoy, France, although severely shocked and suffering pain from a high explosive shell striking near him, Corporal Chafin exhibited great courage and delivered his message to the Regimental Post of Command, returning to his post at Battalion Post of Command before applying for medical aid. [A Distinguished Service Cross was awarded for this action.]

    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Corporal Marile Chafin (ASN: 542435), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company I, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Fossoy, France, 15 July 1918. While delivering a message, Corporal Chafin was severely wounded by the explosion of a shell, but continued with his mission and returned with an answer before reporting for treatment.
