The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Corporal Chester Milton Cellar (ASN: 1213529), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company A, 108th Infantry Regiment, 27th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, east of Ronssoy, France, 29 September 1918. After the other members of his automatic rifle squad had been killed or wounded in an assault against an enemy machine-gun nest, Corporal Cellar operated his gun alone, holding the fire of the machine gun until reinforcements arrived and put it out of action. His great courage and gallantry set an inspiring example to all his comrades.
