By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Captain (Infantry) John C. Cattus, United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Company F, 30th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, during the night of 15 July 1918, near Crezancy, France, Lieutenant Cattus showed the greatest coolness and courage and fearlessly looked after the wounded men of his company, at all times caring for his company and performing his duties in a most admirable manner under a most severe and terrific barrage. On the morning of 26 July 1918, he was ordered to advance his company north of Jaulgonne in the direction of Le Charmel. This he did and under his direction, machine guns and signal equipment were captured as well as many prisoners. Many of the enemy were killed during the advance. By his bravery and fearlessness, he was an example to both officers and men.
