The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to First Lieutenant (Infantry) John C. Cattus, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company F, 30th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Bois-de-Cunel, France, 10 – 11 October 1918. Although severely wounded while advancing with his company and assisting in taking enemy trenches, Lieutenant Cattus returned to the post of command, through heavy machine-gun and shell fire, with valuable information of the troops in the line.
