    By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Corporal Solomon Catalano (ASN: 1697260), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, American Expeditionary Forces, for gallantry in action and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the Victory Medals awarded him. Corporal Catalano distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with Company C, 305th Infantry Regiment, 77th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action at Bazoches, France, 2 September 1918, while a member of a patrol sent out to reconnoiter the enemy’s positions. [This award was rescinded under GHQ, American Expeditionary Forces, Citation Orders No. 9 (August 1, 1920) as the recipient has been awarded a Distinguished Service Cross for deed including this act.]

    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Corporal Solomon Catalano (ASN: 1697260), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company C, 305th Infantry Regiment, 77th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Bazoches, France, 2 September 1918. As a member of a small patrol, Corporal Catalano crossed the Vesle River to reconnoiter the enemy’s positions. The patrol, having accomplished its mission, was attacked by the enemy and subjected to heavy machine-gun fire. In covering the withdrawal, Corporal Catalano attacked, single-handed, and drove off six of the enemy. By his deed he enabled the others to return to our lines with the valuable information obtained. In the encounter he was severely wounded in the throat.
