The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant Charles A. Carton (ASN: 128334), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Headquarters Company, 12th Field Artillery, 2d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, at Givry, France, 15 October 1918. Sergeant Carton displayed conspicuous courage and gallantry under fire by organizing a detachment, leading it out in front of our fine under heavy fire, and bringing back the body of an officer who had been killed by a sniper.
