The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private William C. Carter (ASN: 2418011), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company F, 311th Infantry Regiment, 78th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Grand Pre, France, 1 November 1918. While the advance of his company was being held up by hostile machine-gun fire Private Carter worked his way around the enemy’s flank and, although exposed to sniper fire, he charged the nest, and by effective use of his Chaucat rifle captured that nest and the one on the right. His action made possible the further advance of his company and the capture of 47 more prisoners.
