The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Corporal Michael Carter (ASN: 2256223), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Headquarters Company, 361st Infantry Regiment, 91st Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Gesnes, France, 28 September 1918. Corporal Carter, attached to the signal section of the attacking battalion, repeatedly spliced telephone wires in the midst of heavy artillery and machine-gun fire during the attack, displaying at all times exceptional coolness and personal bravery and aiding materially in maintaining communication between battalion and regimental command posts.
