No. 43, W.D., 1918), Private Clary Carter (ASN: 551513), United States Army, is cited (Posthumously) by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Company H, 38th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, Private Carter displayed exceptional heroism near Mezy, France, 15 July 1918. This soldier held an exposed outpost position against enemy attack and caused them heavy casualties until he was killed. [A Distinguished Service Cross was awarded for this action.]

    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Private Clary Carter (ASN: 551513), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company H, 38th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Mezy, France, 15 July 1918. Private Carter held a post where the Germans made repeated attempts to cross the River Marne in boats. He continued to fire his automatic rifle into the boatloads of Germans, after being wounded, until killed at his post.
