The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Sergeant Carl C. Carter (ASN: 540599), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company A, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in Belleau Wood, France, 21 June 1918. Sergeant Carter fearlessly led his platoon in an attack until shot down by machine-gun bullet, after which he rose to his feet and urged his men forward and then fell dead.
