The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Private James Brad Carpenter (ASN: 558226), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company H, 47th Infantry Regiment, 4th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Bazoches, France, 9 August 1918. Private Carpenter responded to a call for volunteers to destroy a hostile machine gun, the approach to which was covered by fire from three other machine guns. With seven other soldiers he went forward and skillfully and boldly accomplished the mission. This courageous soldier has since been killed in action.
