The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Corporal Frank B. Carpenter (ASN: 1680323), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company C, 307th Infantry Regiment, 77th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Moulin de Charlevaux, France, 5 October 1918. While advancing with his platoon in the Argonne Fewest, Corporal Carpenter located a machine-gun sniper who was directing fire on his squad. Ordering his men to take cover, he drew the sniper’s attention to himself by fire from his rifle. His gallant efforts prevented heavy casualties among his squad, but he himself was killed.
