By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Corporal Stuart Carkener (ASN: 656044), United States Army, is cited (Posthumously) by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Headquarters Company, 76th Field Artillery Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, Corporal Carkener showed extraordinary heroism in battle in the performance of his duty at the forward observation post for many hours under heavy enemy shell fire on both 30 and 31 July 1918, near Roncheres, France, until he himself was killed by an enemy shell. [A Distinguished Service Cross was awarded for this action.]

    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Corporal Stuart Carkener, II, (ASN: 656044), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Headquarters Company, 76th Field Artillery, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Roncheres, France, 30 July 1918. Despite the fierce shelling to which he was subjected, Corporal Carkener remained at his forward observation post for many hours, until killed by enemy shell fire.
