No. 43, W.D., 1918), Corporal Donato Campitelli (ASN: 54921), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Company L, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, on 21 October 1918, near Hill 299 in the Argonne, Corporal Campitelli took, single-handed, fourteen Germans and a machine gun, and wounded one German who refused to go to the rear. [A Distinguished Service Cross was awarded for this action.]

    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Corporal Donato Campitelli (ASN: 54921), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company L, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, on Hill 299, France, 21 October 1918. Shortly after the attack started Corporal Campitelli discovered a machine gun to his left. He worked his way toward it and without aid captured it with its crew and garrison of fourteen men.
