By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Captain (Field Artillery) Harry Leslie Calvin, United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, American Expeditionary Forces, for gallantry in action and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the Victory Medals awarded him. Captain (Field Artillery) Calvin distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with the 12th Field Artillery Regiment, 2d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action near La Vole de Chatel, in the Chateau-Thierry region, 15 June 1918. Although wounded, he went to the aid of three cannoneers who were buried by a shell explosion.

    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Captain (Field Artillery) Harry Leslie Calvin, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 12th Field Artillery, 2d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Tigny, France, 21 July 1918. With utter disregard for personal danger, Captain Calvin passed for 200 yards under intense artillery and machine-gun fire to rescue a wounded officer. Finding the wounded officer could only be moved on a stretcher, he placed him in a shell hole and started back for one. He was severely wounded in the head, falling unconscious. Recovering a half hour later, he tried to go back to rescue the wounded officer, but again fell senseless.
