The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant George W. Caldwell (ASN: 1551561), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Medical Detachment, 76th Field Artillery (Attached), 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near la Trinite Ferme, France, 15 July 1918. Although suffering from a severe gassing, received after his mask had been shot away by the fragment of a shell, Sergeant Caldwell continued through the heavy shelling to administer aid to the wounded.
