The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to First Sergeant Mack C. Byrd (ASN: 156766), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company D, 2d Engineers, 2d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Bois-de-Belleau, France, 3 June 1918. Although badly wounded and suffering intense pain, Sergeant Byrd refused evacuation, remaining and assisting his commanding officer throughout the operations.

Byrd (ASN: 156766), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, American Expeditionary Forces, for gallantry in action and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the Victory Medals awarded him. First Sergeant Byrd distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with Company D, 2d Engineers, 2d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action at Triangle Farm, France, 3 June 1918. Although painfully wounded in the left leg, he refused to go to the rear but continued in the performance of his duties.
