The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Joseph R. Busk, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 38th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, east of Chateau-Thierry, France, 17 June 1918. Despite the coldness of the water, the swiftness of the current, and the presence of the enemy on the opposite bank, Lieutenant Busk completed a personal reconnaissance of the enemy’s position by swimming the River Marne, after which he took a patrol across the river in boats, and obtained valuable information regarding the movements of the enemy.
