The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Edward A. Burton, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 128th Infantry Regiment, 32d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Cierges, France, 1 August 1918. Lieutenant Burton was mortally wounded while carrying a wounded man from a position exposed to artillery and machine-gun fire, but, regardless of his own suffering, he persisted in his task until he had placed the wounded man in a place of safety. Lieutenant Burton died while being evacuated.
