The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private Edward F. Burden (ASN: 2372130), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Sanitary Detachment, 326th Infantry Regiment (Attached), 82d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near St. Juvin, France, 11 October 1918. Under heavy machine-gun and shell fire, Private Burden crossed and re-crossed the Aire River five times, administering first aid to forty wounded soldiers, until he collapsed from exhaustion.
