The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Corporal Raymond Buma (ASN: 556232), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Machine-Gun Battalion, 39th Infantry Regiment, 4th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Cuisy, France, 26 September 1918. After all his squad members had become casualties, Corporal Buma alone continued to operate his gun; and, after his ammunition was exhausted, he ran from shell hole to shell hole picking up ammunition and carrying it back to his gun, resumed fire on the enemy that was very instrumental in the success of the attack. He was killed in action shortly afterwards.
