The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) John Stanley Bruce, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 102d Infantry Regiment, 26th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Trugny, France, 23 July 1918. Despite the fact that he had been wounded, Lieutenant Bruce continued in command of his machine-gun platoon, firing the gun himself when the crew was depleted, until he received a second wound.
