The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private James R. Brown (ASN: 1261273), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 110th Ambulance Company, 103d Sanitary Train, 28th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Fismes, France, August 10 – 13, 1918. Because of the destruction from shell fire of 10 of the 13 ambulances of his company, Private Brown worked for 72 hours, 48 of them without rest, driving through a shell swept and gas-infested area, and thereby making possible the evacuation of the wounded.
