The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant George V. Brown (ASN: 2311980), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company I, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Fleville, France, 4 October 1918. During an attack, Sergeant Brown advanced with five other soldiers into the enemy’s line and, although surrounded by six German machine-guns, held his position until support reached him. Although badly gassed, he refused to be evacuated.
