The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Sergeant Francis J. Brown (ASN: 1561206), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Battery F, 76th Field Artillery, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Chateau-Thierry, France, July 14 – 15, 1918. Sergeant Brown kept in repair the telephone lines, which were constantly being broken by the heavy shelling, remaining at this hazardous task until killed by an enemy shell.

    By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Sergeant Francis J. Brown (ASN: 1561206), United States Army, is cited (Posthumously) by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with the 76th Field Artillery Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, Sergeant Brown displayed extraordinary heroism in action near Chateau Thierry, France, 14 – 15 July 1918. He kept in repair the telephone lines which were constantly being broken by the heavy shelling, remaining at this hazardous task, until killed by an enemy shell.
