The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Herman A. Brocopp, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company I, 363d Infantry Regiment, 91st Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Waereghem, Belgium, 31 October 1918. Lieutenant Bronco, with utter disregard for his own personal safety, repeatedly led his platoon forward in the face of severe enemy fire. During the engagement his command captured two guns of an enemy field artillery battery. His coolness, courage, and bravery were a great inspiration to his men during this action. After the engagement he rendered valuable assistance to his company commander in organizing the company position for the night.
