The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant Hugh F. Brennan (ASN: 1898616), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company K, 328th Infantry Regiment, 82d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Fleville, France, October 8 – 13, 1918. After being severely wounded in the shoulder by a machine-gun bullet, Sergeant Brennan refused to be evacuated but remained in command of his company, to which he had succeeded after all the officers had become casualties. For four days he led his men in the operations against the enemy, though he was suffering severely, until his wound became infected and he was evacuated against his protest.
