The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant Thomas C. Bradford (ASN: 95864), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company B, 167th Infantry Regiment, 42d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, at Bois-de-la-Fere, France, 26 July 1918. While advancing under intense machine-gun fire, Sergeant Bradford was severely wounded in the jaw but refused to be evacuated or to have his wounds dressed. Observing that the company was moving to a forward position, he motioned the men of his platoon to follow him and continued leading them until his weakened condition made it impossible for him to advance further.
