The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private Joseph F. Boughan (ASN: 60153), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company C, 101st Infantry Regiment, 26th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, north of Verdun, France, 27 October 1918. While advancing with the first wave Private Boughan, with another soldier, attacked a machine-gun nest and killed two of the crew. He accomplished this feat only after a hand-to-hand encounter, in which he was severely wounded.
