The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Henry A. Bootz, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 165th Infantry Regiment, 42d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in the Luneville sector, France, March 20 and 21, 1918, and near Villers-sur-Fere, France, 28 July 1918. While conducting a rain in the Luneville sector, Lieutenant Bootz exposed himself to heavy enemy fire to carry a severely wounded soldier to a place of safety. He later reorganized a patrol to search for missing members of his raiding party. Near Meurcy Farm, 28 July Lieutenant Bootz gallantly led his company until he was severely wounded. He then continued to direct the operations of his organization until the position was consolidated.
