    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Henry A. Bootz, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 165th Infantry Regiment, 42d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in the Luneville sector, France, March 20 and 21, 1918, and near Villers-sur-Fere, France, 28 July 1918. While conducting a rain in the Luneville sector, Lieutenant Bootz exposed himself to heavy enemy fire to carry a severely wounded soldier to a place of safety. He later reorganized a patrol to search for missing members of his raiding party. Near Meurcy Farm, 28 July Lieutenant Bootz gallantly led his company until he was severely wounded. He then continued to direct the operations of his organization until the position was consolidated.

Bootz, United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, American Expeditionary Forces, for gallantry in action and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the Victory Medals awarded him. First Lieutenant Bootz distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with the 165th Infantry Regiment, 42d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action near Landres et St. Georges, France, 15 October 1918, and by his brilliant leadership.
