    By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Private William E. Boehle (ASN: 2177788), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Company A, 30th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, during he Battle of 15 July 1918, Private Boehle conducted himself with the greatest coolness and bravery, setting a splendid example to the rest of the men. After the Company was ordered to withdraw about 5:00 P.M., 16 July 1918, Private Boehle voluntarily returned to the position his company had held near Crezancy and throughout the night of 15 – 16 July, assisted in evacuating the wounded. [A Distinguished Service Cross was awarded for this action.]

    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private William E. Boehle (ASN: 2177788), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company A, 30th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Crezancy, France, July 15 – 16, 1918. After his company had withdrawn from their position, Private Boehle voluntarily returned to the former position, and throughout the night of July 15-16 assisted in evacuating the wounded.
